Biography and notes
Andrea Wyllie will be bringing a beautiful collection of songs to our monthly recital series. Be sure to linger after the recital for coffee, tea and nibbles - and a chance to visit with Andrea and her collaborating pianist.
Andrea is a young lyric soprano from Fort McMurray, Alberta. She has recently completed the first year of a M.Mus. in Opera at UBC, studying with soprano Rhoslyn Jones. She enjoys a diverse range of opera and art song repertoire, from Baroque to bel canto to contemporary. Currently, she has a particular interest in Canadian opera and Scandinavian art song. Opera credits include Cobweb in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2016), Naiad in Ariadne auf Naxos (2017), Euridice in Orfeo ed Euridice (2017), and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte (2019). As a member of the UBC Opera Ensemble, she also appeared in the chorus of Eugene Onegin (2017). She has performed in excerpts for the UBC Opera Tea Series as Sandrina from Die Gartnerin aus Liebe, the Marschallin from Der Rosenkavalier, Ariodante from Ariodante, and Violetta from La traviata. In 2016, she was a soprano soloist in the VSO’s Traditional Christmas Concert Series. Throughout her studies, Andrea has performed in the masterclasses of Tracy Dahl, Angela Meade, Carol Isaac, and other distinguished coaches and artists. She is the recipient of the Nancy Hermiston Scholarship in Opera, the Harry and Marjorie Anne Slim Memorial Scholarship in Music, and the UBC Faculty of Arts Graduate Award. This summer, she will be attending the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute in Montreal, directed by Joan Dornemann, assistant conductor for the Metropolitan Opera. She was honoured to receive 2nd place in the 2018 VWMS bursary competition, and is incredibly grateful for their ongoing support of young musicians in Vancouver.
