The October concert features guest artist from Vancouver Academy of Music, Cellist Olivia Yelim Cho, performing works by Champagne, Dvořák, J.S. Bach, and Brahms.

BIOGRAPHY

Olivia Yelim Cho began her musical studies at the age of five under the tutelage of Joseph Elworthy. She is currently enrolled in the Young Artist Collegiate Program at the Vancouver Academy of Music (VAM).

At the age of twelve, Olivia became the youngest grand prize winner in the history of the Kay Meek Competition. Subsequently, at the age of thirteen, she made her solo debut on Vancouver’s Orpheum stage with the VAM Symphony Orchestra. She also performed with the Richmond Orchestra in 2015 as a winner of the Richmond Music Festival Society Concerto Competition.

Olivia placed first in the Canadian Music Competition (2013), and was a semi-finalist in the 9th International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (2015) as well as the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Manulife Competition (2016). Over the years, she has received numerous distinctions and awards from the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival. In 2017, her clarinet trio won both junior first place and audience prize in the 63rd Annual Young Musicians Competition hosted by Friends of Chamber Music. At VAM, she won the 2014 Edith Lando Gifted Youth Competition as well as the 2017 Bjorn and Lori Hareid Senior Secondary Competition.

In 2016, Olivia attended the Banff Centre’s Székely/Rolston Young Musicians Program. In 2017, she attended the Orford Music Academy on full scholarship, as well as the Aspen Music Festival and School as a recipient of the Emerging Artist Grant from VAM. At Aspen, she studied with Darrett Adkins and Richard Aaron, and was the youngest finalist of the Low Strings Concerto Competition.

Olivia is a student in the Accelerated/Enriched Challenge program at Eric Hamber Secondary School. For the 2017-18 school year, Olivia is President of Student Council as well as President of the “Healing Harmonies” club, a group of high school students who perform music for local senior homes. Apart from music, Olivia also enjoys reading, drawing, lettering, and graphic design.
