FIRST PLACE AWARD WINNER in the VWMS 2018 Scholarship Competition for Orchestral Instruments

 

Jack Li, 18, is from Vancouver and studies with Jose Franch-Ballester and Christopher Lee.

Jack was named as one of Canada's Top 30 Classical Musicians Under 30 by CBC/Radio-Canada in 2018, and was the national first-prize winner of the Canadian Music Competition (CMC) in 2015. Other prizes include a silver medal in the Open Woodwinds category of the FCMF National Music Festival in 2016 and finalist status in the Concertino Praga International Competition in 2017 hosted by the Czech Radio. He was also featured on the syndicated National Public Radio (NPR) program From the Top alongside acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley in early 2017, which was broadcast to over 700,000 listeners across the United States. Jack won first place in the 2018 VWMS Scholarship Competition for Orchestral Instruments and looks forward to his recital today.

He has also has performed in ensembles across Canada and the United States, including the National Youth Band of Canada, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He was also named as an alternate member of National Youth Orchestra of China's inaugural season. Masterclasses performances also include those with Charles Neidich, Ricardo Morales, Corrado Giuffredi and Yehuda Gilad.

Currently, Jack is a first-year undergraduate at Harvard University studying applied mathematics and economics, where he is also a member of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra.
